A tweet-based journal of what I’ve been playing…

"Power: Doubles the value of visible sword cards."
Well then, goodbye… 🤺
Everyone follow @twotinydice this #FF btw and get Forward: Escape the Fold! pic.twitter.com/N4cRcod8wB

I previously described one of the art forms contained in what we call games as "experiential narrative": https://t.co/JPrktbjDeb

This one is a great game-jam-made example! https://t.co/297XY8cpE6
Nightmare Reaper by @BitBlazing is Doom, but with #roguelike-esque randomization and progression, plus dynamic weapon generation à la Borderlands.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 7, 2022
Or in short: really fun! 🙂 pic.twitter.com/fl4LYY08Ov
Back on @TheMonsterTrain after quite a while. Feels great, still one of the best games out there! pic.twitter.com/W6mWAinPev
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 8, 2022
Shotgun King by @PUNKCAKE_delice's @benjamin_soule_, @TRASEVOL_DOG & @pentadrangle is great! Very polished with unique chess-based "shmup" mechanics. Having to choose randomized bundles of one up- and one downside after each level is super interesting too! Made in 72h btw. 🤯 pic.twitter.com/sfwSxXlIGY
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 10, 2022
Ok #7DRL made #roguelike word games a thing and I like it. The Typist's Quest makes letters resources. When you loot a knife, it's actually a bag of {K, N, I, F, E} each with one use for a future "demolish" in battle or "north" to move around. So clever!https://t.co/v5wa3YBq5q pic.twitter.com/XkaIOfocGS
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 12, 2022
#VampireSurvivors now a card game? 👀 pic.twitter.com/8u4dk1Ot2U
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 13, 2022
Insurmountable was always a very unique #roguelike. The 2.0 update is out now and reworks the whole game. Not really a fan of all the incremental % upgrades, but the meta inventory / planning layer has potential!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 15, 2022
Anyways, check it out if it seems interesting: @Insurmountgame pic.twitter.com/YjkqNV3oy1
Spellcraft is another fun #7DRL take on #roguelike word games. You collect letters from the names of defeated monsters to then craft spell names to add to your book.https://t.co/h7pZxv9dSW pic.twitter.com/nqIUFpFuje

Ok here are my top 3 Wordle-likes!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 18, 2022
Hurdle: a Wordle chain, 5th one starts with the 4 previous solutions as pre-filled guesses.https://t.co/geZSdRsM2e@quordle: 4 Wordles simultaneously. Simple but very effective variant!@thatwafflegame: Letter-swapping, brain-bending fun! pic.twitter.com/3np2wHArcS
Broughlike of the year out now! https://t.co/E3TGKsmODi pic.twitter.com/Vky9ncBhUk
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 20, 2022
Getting back into @madguy90's Streets of Rogue, basically top-down Deus Ex but #roguelike and more emergent. You find items with wild effects in heavily randomized playthroughs and combine them creatively to remote-hack, sneak around, brawl, cause chaos, and steal a governor hat. pic.twitter.com/ChwjQ8xaFi
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 20, 2022
By the way, and I'm not going to stop saying this, every #roguelike with a fixed order of "biomes" should offer this option (at least after finishing the game once in the original order)! It solves a lot of issues surrounding the "reset problem". Kudos @madguy90! 🙂 pic.twitter.com/mQq2hpQ0X8
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 21, 2022
Second time I get to the "final" boss and lifevest saves me 4(!) times. I knew upgrading from 40% to 50% would matter! 😂
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 22, 2022
In case you missed it, @RevitaGame by @BenstarDEV is now out of Early Access and it's easily among the best side-scrolling action #roguelike games out there! https://t.co/WGovZS5nSF pic.twitter.com/IKxB7USLkG
Unlocked the Chaos Ticket in @RevitaGame. Here we go… 😳 pic.twitter.com/IBfLIgz23y
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 23, 2022
Peglin is a roguelike gone pachinko machine. It's a fun twist on the formula, but – like pachinko machines – can be frustratingly random.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 27, 2022
BTW if you like the idea of a Peggle-like roguelike, @roundguardgame is cool and gives you a little more control than this one! pic.twitter.com/ztv6ye1mO7
Not that it's a surprise, but this is very good! Got lifetime "pro" after a handful of puzzles. https://t.co/BlFzsqOoMP
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 28, 2022
First boss down in the freshly released Rogue Legacy 2 (by @CellarDoorGames). My character had the old-timey-filter drawback, which adds to the gravitas. 😝
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) April 29, 2022
If you accept the myriads of meta upgrades, there's a well-designed sidescrolling roguelite here with lots of variety! pic.twitter.com/DhcMhLWph6
Nomad Survival is a #roguelike in the vein of Vampire Survivors. It has more build freedom and a stronger focus on the difference between characters and their base ability. Pretty cool and also cheap. Worth a look if you like the inspiration (or the original Magic Survival btw). pic.twitter.com/73pjuvQCmw
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 2, 2022
Got 10/10🏆 on the #SuperAutoPets weekly with a Hippo surviving due to getting buffed to level 3 by the new White Tiger. The game was already replayble, but the weekly packs make it evergreen.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 3, 2022

You'll be missed, duck one! 🦆 pic.twitter.com/2mp1me3PK1
Let's go, new T3 Gladiator! Auto Balls by @lectvs is a unique take on auto-battlers and has been coming along very nicely!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 5, 2022
Check it out: https://t.co/UTe276hxVe pic.twitter.com/ke4qr08AJt
Vampire Survivors popularized the passive #roguelike shooter, but there are also great active ones (i.e. you have to aim), like Geometry Arena or Nova Drift. Neon Sundown is another neat one. The "synergy tree" feels very powerful. Needs more content, but that's on the roadmap. pic.twitter.com/WRZoTl7rqp
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 6, 2022
1/10 Been thinking about #GameDesign reasons that make me return to @TeamWoodGames' #SuperAutoPets more than to other (match-based, vaguely roguelike-ish) games. To me it's all about how the game is systemically built to be playable "whenever" and "forever".
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 8, 2022
Let me explain! 🧵 pic.twitter.com/d3fFjM4GVg
While Brotato, @blobfishdev's latest demo, is eyeing the genre of Vampire-Survivors-likes, I'm going back to the previous title Space Gladiators for a few runs. There are big names in side-scrolling #roguelike games these days, but this one still has a very special kind of charm. pic.twitter.com/BpznuIAf0a
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 9, 2022
Just in time for lunch break, @TeamWoodGames officially released the new Super Auto Pets update. I like how it goes so far! 😎
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 10, 2022
In case you missed it btw, the other day I wrote about the new "weekly pack" mode and a few other aspects of the game's design: https://t.co/c57dPnTxwZ pic.twitter.com/OYzP8zy3tq
Donut Arena by @MarioAriano is fun! While the combat controls are super simple, there's definitely skill to it. Also has a risk-vs-reward aspect where you can decide to retreat to an easier arena temporarily (if you e.g. lost your equipment in a higher one). Find it on Steam! pic.twitter.com/KunIwMVWiG
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 10, 2022
Here's another neat "active #roguelike shooter" with a pretty cool art style: 10 Minutes Till Dawn by @flanne7. It's completely free since it's "just" the smaller version of the upcoming 20 Minutes Till Dawn, but there's quite a bit of content to explore here already! https://t.co/0cJ00xxLLR pic.twitter.com/NDcvwGqCEu
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 12, 2022
How to turn the enemy team into a bus full of insects in just one round of @TeamWoodGames' Super Auto Pets.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 13, 2022
That weekly pack is super fun! 😀 pic.twitter.com/OKF8phAOkc
Gunlocked by @FromLefcourt is the shmup of Vampire-Survivors-likes. Not too many different weapons (yet), but they're really well-designed in how they influence positional play and moving in certain patterns (through the enemy bullet hell of course). Great updates so far too! pic.twitter.com/Xci3R9QCnh
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 18, 2022
Dungeons of Voidria by @_Toblue is a polished and unique take on the traditional turn-based #roguelike with tons of content and regular early-access updates. The combat system is based around status effects and has you plan out sequences of moves each turn. Well worth a look! pic.twitter.com/lLgFTgEUrY
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 19, 2022
Late to the party with @MadMimic's @DandyAceGame but it's still a cool and refreshingly colorful action #roguelike! All ability cards can be used to support another one as a passive, which opens up lots of build options. Combat feels less frantic than Hades, which I appreciate. pic.twitter.com/ZdJuJhoXK4
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 20, 2022
This #SuperAutoPets weekly is a scaler's dream! 🤩🦒 pic.twitter.com/98GYrm9cvT
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 25, 2022
Brutal Orchestra by @ItsTheMaceo and @nico_codrilo is a unique turn-based #roguelike where you collect "mana" of multiple types for different actions by attacking enemies with the corresponding health bar colors. Lots of positional play too with the 5 combat lanes! pic.twitter.com/d3kOq5G9ui
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 27, 2022
Golfie by @TriheartStudio is an example of "deckbuild all the things". A golf game with cards to change your shot (e.g. add curve or lob) or the terrain (e.g. add walls or jump pads). Also as I'm not into memorizing perfect routes, I appreciate random courses. Lots of potential! pic.twitter.com/3W0piqSNNR
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 30, 2022
Last Group Out is a cute Tarkov-like in 2D. Go on (5-minute) raids, fight scavs, get loot to trade, fulfill quests etc. It's less stressful in many ways (you lose collected items on death but not your equipment). Not too much content yet but there are new updates almost daily! pic.twitter.com/oWCwJNkL4M
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) May 31, 2022
Shogun Showdown reminds me of En Garde (physical card game by Reiner Knizia) with its left-to-right fencing-style movement and tactics, but in a modern #roguelike style where you add to and upgrade your abilities.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 1, 2022
Worth checking out! Find it on @itchio: https://t.co/B1txQqj2ES pic.twitter.com/wdMFVRgq6x
Most Valuable Pet award on this 10/10 run clearly goes to the Donkey. ("Friend faints -> Push last enemy to the front.")
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 2, 2022
For example just look at this beautiful obliteration of the tiger snake combo.#SuperAutoPets pic.twitter.com/gyrNha5A4b
Been enjoying Dungeon Cards (called Rogue Cards on iOS). It's a simple tiny-grid dungeon crawl roguelike with an interesting timing element (special abilities are triggered by picking up gold a certain amount of times). Be aware that meta progression is somewhat relevant though. pic.twitter.com/c3IsWfnLzK
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 6, 2022
Ready to call this a decently successful start to a #SuperAutoPets weekly pack after these 5 runs… 🤓
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 7, 2022
My best advice apparently: Win on round 15! pic.twitter.com/73nu8yTkJY
20 Minutes Till Dawn (@20MTDGame) by @flanne7 is in early access now. It's a Vampire-Survivors-like arena #roguelike with aiming and a unique visual style. Could use more variety but the builds are fun! 🐉
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 8, 2022
By the way, I ironically prefer the game's 10-minute "quickplay" mode. 🤔 pic.twitter.com/Mrw7m74oow
A lot to learn from POINPY about #GameDesign! Time for a thread! 🧵

TL;DR @OjiroFumoto builds on Downwell to create near-perfect fundamentals for a mobile game.
Kudos to the team @2nd_error403, @CalumBowen, @AShellinthePit, @jujuadams; and to @devolverdigital & @Netflix! pic.twitter.com/PCpUyWkNbA
Little Obedient Robot is another interesting experiment by @sdgames. It's a game where you "program" your moves akin to board games like RoboRally, but mixed with platformer mechanics and deck-building. It's free on Steam and might very well give you some game design inspiration! pic.twitter.com/laF3n3WeLS
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 19, 2022
Didn't even know this was a thing in @TheCycleGame until I inspected my inventory just now! In fact those rattlers always seem rather child-like when they run after you, scream excitedly and move their legs super fast… 🐛 pic.twitter.com/SMiz9SGlMH
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) June 24, 2022
Getting ready for the big Into The Breach update @subsetgames announced by returning to my under-played squads! The delayed damage of the fire mechs is really interesting. I do hope those civilians I'm protecting have their fire brigade ready though… 🔥🚒 pic.twitter.com/DaagyGd4Pg
