A tweet-based journal of what I’ve been playing…
Dice Tribe: Ambitions is a solid worker placement game with dice that does a great job of explaining itself. The tooltip of every element basically takes you straight to its section of the "rulebook". It's a digital original, but actual board game adaptations should also do this. pic.twitter.com/pUpHClIFNH

Got the 👑 in @FallGuysGame in my fifth match ever!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 7, 2022
Now thinking of ending my career at this high point… 🤔 pic.twitter.com/vNpJUG2TFw
As an old beta "Grand Master" I have fond memories of Gwent. Rogue Mage sacrifices the best-of-3 nuances for a streamlined "points race" in a #roguelike format.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 7, 2022
Takes getting used to, but works. Runs are less scripted than in Runeterra's similar but more content-driven SP mode. pic.twitter.com/zIM01kJkrv
My preferred way of playing is a "curse" in @PlayGwent Rogue Mage? I'll take the free points!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 8, 2022
I like the game more as it gets harder. The one-round structure is simplistic, but managing spell energy through the run makes up for it somewhat. Also, random starter deck option! ❤️ pic.twitter.com/jxownKQLTR
Very accessible dice #roguelike that explores its mechanics extremely thoroughly through tons of different characters and scenarios. The design has been honed for years now. It was one of my top games of 2020 already!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 11, 2022
Go pick it up! Now that it's on Steam, there's no excuse! https://t.co/2QGRyCVhYw
Finally checked out the Downfall mod for @MegaCrit's Slay the Spire. Easily one of the most polished (or "developed") mods I've seen for a game. New classes are on the complex side, but balanced and clever. Tons of new cards and relics (like the @RhapsodyPlays pick) to explore! pic.twitter.com/h8pyPDZvnB
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 13, 2022
Been getting back into the groove of playing at least one match a day of @keithburgun's Auro lately. There aren't many games as evergreen as this one! pic.twitter.com/9dBRQVOe7O
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 15, 2022
Now that's a big-pet team… and a whole bench of fresh frozen 6-drops to cheer them on! 🙌
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 17, 2022
(Yes, it went 10/10.) pic.twitter.com/lfYroJJIOi
Been waiting to do this ever since they teased the new squads! 🏈💥 https://t.co/zUM3J93ut5 pic.twitter.com/qTIIfPSdLX
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 19, 2022
Into the Breach has always been a stellar example of great UI design, but it really shows again in the mobile version. With just a few small tweaks it works so well, it basically feels like it was designed for mobile from the start. pic.twitter.com/6AAV5Wayqi
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 20, 2022
Here's one for the #roguelike tactics fans! This one comes with Diablo-like loot without the Diablo-like grind. It also features one of my favorite roguelike combat mechanics: Your weapons don't just determine damage values, but the actual shape of your attacks! https://t.co/LLM2EC5zBY pic.twitter.com/NZmDfk7R42
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 22, 2022
Just King by @VISHgamestudio is an interesting new "active" auto-battler where you move your squad and, that's the spicy part, rotate it around your king. This results in some interesting positional play depending on whether you picked melee or ranged units etc. pic.twitter.com/zXa0lDYcxp
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 23, 2022
Sunday fun fact: Leech + Camel is actually good. #SuperAutoPets pic.twitter.com/4kxDGd1j6n

"If indie games are underreported, mobile games must be invisible" https://t.co/VWhvPJMcas
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 25, 2022
If the paragraph below is an example of the press picking up on mobile games, I'd rather they stay invisible tbh.
That being said, here's a bunch of actually good mobile games! 🧵 1/10 pic.twitter.com/7mTgfeH3m5
This one always felt designed with mobile in mind and now I can confirm it works amazingly well on a small (touch) screen as well! 🙂
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 27, 2022
If you're into #roguelike games and haven't picked this up yet, go for it (on whatever platform you prefer)! https://t.co/PTODJnIg5W
Shoutout to @FromLefcourt who has been constantly adding to Gunlocked (the shmup of Vampire-Survivors-likes) these past months. As an example there's now a whole new system of trials in the game allowing you to add all kinds of difficulty modifiers to your run. Kudos! pic.twitter.com/j0QFIW2Zfg
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 29, 2022
The latest Just King (@VISHgamestudio) update casually features this line in its patch notes: "All movement has roughly doubled"
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) July 30, 2022
Makes it a lot more fun and responsive. Especially if you have the "Rusher" synergy (i.e. extra movement speed) on your team! pic.twitter.com/a7M9munWQu
Card Crawl Adventure is probably the meatiest @tinytouchtales game yet! It's a #roguelike deckbuilding twist on Card Thief's core with tons going on, even though it's "just" a small-grid card game.
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 3, 2022
Love the weekly crawl format with one tavern a day for shorter sessions too btw! pic.twitter.com/xz4Irv7xLq
Boneraiser Minions by @caiysware is a necromancy take on the Vampire Survivors formula. Instead of collecting weapons you summon minions to fight enemy minions. Love how fast the rounds go in this one!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 6, 2022
Be aware though, it doesn't have one but several meta progression systems! 🤓 pic.twitter.com/5q5PPeWJMc
Last In Space by @DarennKeller is a really cool #TIC80 (@tic_computer) action strategy game! You explore a randomized universe, building structures specific to each planet type to generate resources, ammo etc. The issue: aliens all over the place! 🛸https://t.co/thke5vbRy1 pic.twitter.com/FQY1SroEho
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 7, 2022
First run of the new #SuperAutoPets weekly (and also of the new patch, those font and icon changes aren't easy to get used to after hundreds of hours, haha)!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 8, 2022
Anyways, big beaver is big! 🦫 pic.twitter.com/kXlq8JUZII
My @playdate is here! Tiny but super high-quality device with its very own eco-system of original #IndieDev titles delivered in "seasons". Also great support for third-party devs, side-loading "unofficial" apps works like a charm via wifi!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 9, 2022
A couple early favorites below! 👇 pic.twitter.com/jQNlKcYA55
Thanks to @theancientchild there's finally a Wordle-like for gamers! Check out @Quessedxyz! pic.twitter.com/zudsLS2DcY
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 9, 2022
Dawngeon is a neat twin-stick #roguelike survival game with randomly generated dungeons and solid combat. Quite impressive for a "student project". Available on @itchio for PC and on iOS, 100% free. pic.twitter.com/uGT0P2RfVV
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 15, 2022
Madcap Mosaic by @1classydude is a unique take on #roguelike deckbuilding. Instead of a deck, you get a board of tiles that you navigate to generate attack and defense. After every combat you add tiles to the "bag". Lots of interesting spatial effects and synergies to explore! pic.twitter.com/OgY9XF4f1M
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 22, 2022
Pick Pack Pup (@NicMagnier, @ArthurMHamer, @logeyG) unlocked for me on @playdate this week. Already a favorite! It's a match 3 with the clever twist of packing & shipping boxes. Lots of cool variants!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 23, 2022
And some very familiar challenges after having shipped 4 Kickstarters… 😜📦 pic.twitter.com/HHiEEYA6fK
Another day, another deckbuilder: Rally. This one draws your deck randomly to a grid each turn and calculates attack and defense values based on adjacency bonuses. The idea is interesting but as you only get one card swap per turn, there's quite a lot of randomness involved. pic.twitter.com/ZQ3wgPzGci
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 24, 2022
Bounty of One by @OptizOnionGames is a cowboy Vampire-Survivors-like. Combat is slower and more tactical than in most games of the genre. You only shoot when standing still, making movement (and dashing) more of a choice. Still basic (early access), but there's potential here! pic.twitter.com/bbRPzR3sB9
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 26, 2022
ZOR: Pilgrimage of the Slorfs (@RighteousHQ) is in Early Access! It revolves around efficiently maneuvering 2 characters on a turn-based tactics map (there is combat, but movement and action resources are really front and center). Between encounters you build your camp and deck. pic.twitter.com/X8zg3BDad7
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 30, 2022
Have to agree with this Immortality review. They made (impressively detailed) making-ofs for 3 movies that never were, but forgot about the game. The "mystery detective" motivation is lost. The main menu says it's a mere clip organization software and it's not telling lies (🙃). pic.twitter.com/37whoRe0ig
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) August 31, 2022
Neophyte (@RegalPigeon) came a long way! On Steam now, more variety, very polished! The one thing I'd love to see addressed is (as usual) the reset problem. Early floors just aren't interesting, even on higher difficulties. It's fun later on, but I often dread starting a new run. https://t.co/8QHSgA37zP pic.twitter.com/sndIghZppO
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 1, 2022
Exodemic by @ganashaw is a unique #roguelike space shooter! You auto-orbit a planet with 3 actions: jump to another one, shoot (at orbit's center), dash (forward on orbit). It's all based on relative movement / positions of enemies, your ship and planets. Interesting & elegant! pic.twitter.com/QNUpdrpUpt
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 2, 2022
Don't mind me, just spinnin' the crank to take my penguin friends to their desired floor… 🐧
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 4, 2022
(Game is Flipper Lifter by @SerenityForge on the @playdate.) pic.twitter.com/VeAoxe96Cz
Chambers of Devious Design by @RedbeakGames is a cool digital board game! Feels like a streamlined Castles of Mad King Ludwig with more player interaction (e.g. "cannon" rooms). Includes several campaigns and a customizable skirmish mode (incl. my favorite option: "randomize"). pic.twitter.com/SiCoRUsFGm
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 6, 2022
Love the new rotating #SuperAutoPets tier preview! 😍
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 7, 2022
Also points are now called "snacks".
So here I come, 50k Snacks Club! 😎 https://t.co/oV1dkSED00 pic.twitter.com/fmSXJBbIkm
A Balanced Brew just received an update that doubles the number of levels and adds a randomly generated daily. This one's easily among my top games of the year so far!
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 8, 2022
If you have a #Playdate, go get it: https://t.co/7ZNU4E3PtE pic.twitter.com/j0HCpZ4nqN
Lucky Luna (@builtbysnowman) is gorgeous and the next @netflix game worth playing! Poinpy was a jump-only platformer, this one has no jump, but focuses on swiping left / right + falling. Features a thankfully not very chatty story mode and randomized endless score chasing. pic.twitter.com/NGlSy6jSGd
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 9, 2022
You may know Night of the Full Moon (@GamesFullMoon) as a streamlined #roguelike deckbuilder for mobile. However the latest update added "Memory in the Mirror", a full-on auto-battler mode akin to Hearthstone Battlegrounds. But single-player and, yay, in portrait format! pic.twitter.com/VQ3Tjnh4vn
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 12, 2022
Dice Versa by @TomRagtag is a score-chasing dice puzzler with super simple rules but quite a bit of depth. The fact that you get bonus "style points" for pulling of tricky matches gives it a constant risk-versus-reward tension. Originally made for the @gamemakerstk game jam btw! pic.twitter.com/9eTSF6BE7y
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 15, 2022
Only played a few matches so far but this seems really fun! Ever since playing @SupergiantGames' Pyre I was wondering when someone would make a team-based multiplayer version of the whole "MOBA combat sports" idea. https://t.co/s4i3Atr4Uv
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 17, 2022
Not the biggest tower defense fan, but Isle of Arrows by @gridpopgames (@Lutzmade) comes with a board game twist. It's very much centered around planful tile placement and doesn't care much about scaling stats or levels. This makes it more elegant than many other genre entries. pic.twitter.com/1Q8TISpw3V
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 19, 2022
Gold in @PlayOmega. Excited and scared at the same time! 😀
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 19, 2022
As usual with these games, it gets a lot more interesting once you get into ranks where most players are able to place decently mechanics-wise, so wins are determined more and more by tricky maneuvers and team tactics. pic.twitter.com/vQOTdwmWSR
So @RogueGenesia is another Vampire-Survivors-like. Its biggest change to the formula is a Spire-like map, so you're not spending 30 minutes in a single battle but 2-3 minutes in many. This kind of pacing fits the, true to the genre, very simple gameplay loop quite well. pic.twitter.com/GWN0owsuqn
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 21, 2022
Novi Cube by @randexe_studios is a challenging brick breaker game… but, obviously, you draft #roguelike-ish upgrades when leveling up. Not sure how high the skill ceiling really is here, but in any case it's a fun twist on an age-old satisfying gameplay formula! pic.twitter.com/z3QBCesTQD
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 23, 2022
The retro aesthetics juice is through the roof in @RubyBenji's @tiny_rogues! Great enemy design, which isn't too common in the genre! If you're into #roguelike arena shooters and don't mind a bit of RPG-ish loot thrown in, check this one out. On Steam now for a very small price. pic.twitter.com/35otXPDyYQ
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 23, 2022
Likely the best "Survivors-like" out there right now! https://t.co/s09vF0f28c pic.twitter.com/LXdj6DOPyK
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 27, 2022
Desta: The Memories Between by @ustwogames (Monument Valley) is kind of like Into the Breach, but with bouncing ball physics. Interesting combination of discrete-grid movement and continuous-space ball throwing. 🏀
— Fabian Fischer (@Ludokultur) September 29, 2022
Unfortunately it steps firmly into the old "reset problem" trap. pic.twitter.com/MPwg2sd7y1
